Research Unit for Information Environments (IE)
IE is a cross-University of the Arts London initiative providing a framework
for existing individual research as well as collaborative projects within the
unit and further afield. Designated in July 2007,
its academic remit is to explore how information is generated, received and experienced in public spaces, whether physical or virtual. With communication as a common focus, the unit explores the potential for developing new synergies between art and design, and builds on the existing research activities of key members of staff at four of the Universities ’ six colleges. Research interests represented by unit members includes architecture, design history, digital arts, graphic & information design, interaction design, oral history; site-specific installation, spatial drawing, and typography.
IE external partners consist of other organisations and professional design
practices specialising
in areas that enhance IE ’s remit. Research projects and activities have also been established with collaborators in academic institutions in the UK and abroad. Since designation, IE staff have exhibited at the Poetry Library, Royal Festival Hall; begun work on funded projects including mapping the spaces of the future Olympic site; non-design as a definition of place in environments and conducting a scoping study on communication design for counter terror; community engagement and life histories on the UK's largest housing estate; health and wellbeing in the digital economy; innovation in teaching and learning environments; information visulisation and small design businesses in India; communication of place in world heritage sites; designed television title sequences and spatial set graphics for ITV and BBC; installing site-specific works in a hospital in Ireland; and presenting historical research on British road signs. A number of staff have been the subject of recent features in the international design press and recently published books.
